Hypoallergenic

When most people hear the word “hypoallergenic” it is commonly understood to mean “no allergies.” However, this is a false representation of this terms true meaning. The prefix “hypo” actually means “less than.” It may be helpful to think of doodles as being on a sort of “hypoallergenic spectrum.” Doodles will display a range in their hypoallergenic qualities depending on the genetic recombination inherited from their parents. Not all doodle coats are the same.

Hypoallergenic DOES NOT mean no shedding or no allergic reaction. Hypoallergenic DOES mean that your dog will shed MUCH less and will create an allergy friendly environment. Every doodle displays a range in their hypoallergenic qualities. As a helpful rule of thumb, the curlier the coat the more hypoallergenic a dog tends to be.

When choosing a breeder, it is important to listen for a fundamental understanding of this term as many may try to convince families their dogs “will not shed” or “will not cause allergic reactions.” If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. These are guarantees a breeder should never offer.
