Generations of Doodles

Joy’s Dood Ranch began with the vision of raising multigenerational Bernedoodles. As of right now, we raise F1b, F2, F2b and F2bb Bernedoodles.

F2 Bernedoodle

F2 Bernedoodle is the result of breeding two F1 (first generation) Bernedoodles together. This pairing is not seen often in the breeding world because of the risk involved in producing unfurnished or flat coated puppies. If you remember from you high school biology class, each puppy will go through a genetic process called recombination. In this process, the puppies will inherit one copy from their mother and one copy from their father to produce a new combined gene. Purebred Poodles will carry two dominant copies of the furnishing gene known as FF while Bernese Mountain Dogs carry two recessive genes known as II or ICIC. When breeding first generation Bernedoodles (F1) every puppy will have a 100% chance of inheriting one F (furnishings) copy and one I (unfurnished) copy. Since the Poodles gene is dominant, you only need one dominant gene for it to show up in the dog’s appearance.

Now, back to F2s. This means that when breeding two F1s, which will always carry one copy of each gene, your recombination formula changes. These two will now produce puppies that each have a 25% chance of inheriting FF, a 50% chance of inheriting FI and a 25% chance of inheriting II (unfurnished). This means that when breeders choose to produce F2 Bernedoodles, be cautious. Make sure they have either genetically tested your puppy’s coat type (and can show you the results) or you can visibly see furnishings before taking your puppy home.

Our F2 puppies are from pairing Huck with Hazel. Since they both carry FIs we genetically test the puppies who do not have visible furnishings after 2 weeks of age prior to receiving deposits.

F1b Bernedoodle

An F1b Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and a Poodle. These seem to be increasing in popularity. This generation of Bernedoodle is essentially bred back to a Poodle to reinforce the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle. Their coats tend to be softer and they have a greater chance of inheriting FF.

F2b Bernedoodle

F2b Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and an F1b Bernedoodle. Our F2b Bernedoodles are from pairing Huck with Dolly. Huck carries FI since he is an F1 generation, and Dolly carries the FF gene which will produce furnished puppies in every litter.

F2bb Bernedoodle

F2bb Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1bb Bernedoodle and an F1 Bernedoodle. Our F2bb Bernedoodles are from pairing Huck with Maple. Huck carries FI since he is an F1 generation, and Maple carries the FF gene which will produce furnished puppies in every litter.
